contemporary cut
Set into a sloping wooded site in Sterling, Massachusetts, The Contemporary Cut was designed as a bold response to both landscape and lifestyle. Clean lines, asymmetrical roof forms, and a layered massing strategy create a modern silhouette that feels sculpted into the terrain rather than placed upon it.
The home’s composition uses a series of intersecting volumes to break down scale, frame views, and organize interior living zones. Dark vertical cladding is contrasted with warm natural wood tones, bringing depth and texture to the exterior while reinforcing a refined, contemporary character.
Large expanses of glass were intentionally positioned to capture daylight, connect occupants to the surrounding landscape, and create dramatic interior moments throughout the day. Entry sequencing, grade transitions, and outdoor relationships were carefully considered to make the most of the site’s natural topography.
Inside, the residence was envisioned as a clean yet comfortable family home—modern in expression, but warm in experience. Open gathering spaces, private retreats, and seamless indoor-outdoor flow support both daily routines and entertaining.
The Contemporary Cut reflects a balance of architecture and environment: a distinctive custom home shaped by the land, elevated through thoughtful detailing, and designed for modern New England living.
